Abstract: This study has discussed the applicability of an artificial bed material of low density, chamotte, to physical models. A series of experiments with chamotte, whose submerged density is 0. 4 and diameter is 1. 3 mm, was carried out under different hydraulic conditions to form different bed patterns. Bed geometry was measured by laser light marking and video recording. Comparison about bar formation, bar length and bar height has demonstrated that chamotte can fairly reproduce bed pattern, length and height of bars and bed load rate similar to those with sand. One case, however, produced different results from previous studies, which needs further analysis.
