Abstract: Physical habitat simulations were carried out to investigate the impact of hydropeaking on the stream morphology and habitat suitability. A 20 km long reach located downstream of a dam in Korea was chosen for the study area. Zacco platypus was found to be a dominant species in the study area. The 1D unsteady flow model and the habitat suitability index model were used for the hydraulic and habitat simulations, respectively. The results from the physical habitat simulations provided the impact of flow regulation on the stream morphology and habitat suitability. The importance of considering the sorting of the bed materials on the stream morphology and habitat suitability was also discussed. The validity of the quasi-steady model for computing the long-term change in the stream morphology and the short-term change in the habitat suitability is also investigated.
