Modelling Flood and Large Wood: A Dynamic Duo in Motion

Abstract: This study investigates the large wood (LW) entrainment, transport, and deposition in a 8km reach of the Allier River, France, using the ORSA2D_WT model, which integrates two-dimensional Shallow Water Equations with a Discrete Element Method that solves LW motion. Field data collected between 2020 and 2024, including Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) -tracked LW positions, detailed topographical surveys, and hydraulic measurements, were used to calibrate and validate the model. The study focuses on the March 2024 flood event, which strongly affected LW transport in the selected reach. The model successfully predicted the entrainment of seven out of nine logs, but discrepancies in deposition patterns were observed, suggesting the need for further refinement in representing trapping mechanisms, LW characteristics, and the interaction of LW with riverbank topography. This paper aims to make use of insights derived from field data to understand areas of improvements of the numerical model.
