Abstract: Continental monsoon climate is labelled with much rainfall in a period while less in another. For this reason, the river engineering is assigned to release floodwater and restore water resources alternatively and periodically. The tilting weir with controllable plate, which could be fixed from horizontal to vertical as desired, was competent this work well. Taking an adjustable tilting weir as a typical case, the hydraulic performance and flow characteristics was studied, including the relationship of water head and flow discharge, the velocity distribution of weir flow, the central flow of accident condition, etc. The water head increased linearly with the growth of flow discharge. While one weir plate stayed horizontal and the others vertical, the discharge of rectangular notch could be as large as 20 percentage of the whole discharge. Sequential lifting up or laying down the weir plate should be avoided in case of river bed erosion due to concentrated outflow. Instead, the operation of two or three weir plates in a group was advised.
