Abstract: World shores are subjected, in many places, to an accelerated urban development that limits options for adaptation to a changing environment, as exemplified by climate change. Here, the case of the fast Spanish coasts urban development is presented, reviewing also some of the specific storm hazards in such scenarios. A brief description of some anomalous storms that happened during the last decade is made, showing the influence of different characterization parameters in the realized damage. These anomalous events may be seen as advanced examples of future conditions, and its analysis may help to identify good and bad practices and contribute to more resilient urban design.
