Abstract: After impoundation of the Xiaolangdi Reservoir, water and sand conditions in the lower Yellow River changed greatly, leading to river evolution. However, there is a lack of systematic research on the long-term channel evolution in different lower-reach sections. This study analyzed the evolution of main channel at typical downstream sections using 2000-2022 cross-section data. Results show that downstream sections have different characteristics, with more upstream and less downstream degradation. For the wandering reach upstream Gaocun, the main channel is becoming narrower and deeper. In the flood season, main channel swing in the wandering reach is large but decreased from 2013. Bankfull flow continues to grow stably. Riverbed longitudinal stability increases as bed sediment coarsens significantly. The wandering section's lateral stability changes little, while that of the transition and meandering sections increases. These findings can support the management of the lower Yellow River and water resource utilization.
