Abstract: We developed Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) to predict water temperature in reservoirs in Southeast Asia and the rivers immediately downstream. The models used meteorological data and information on respective dams (e. g. height, surface area etc. ) as predictors, and included a lagged structure to account for delayed responses of water temperature to meteorological conditions. The models explained 88% and 79% of the deviance in river and reservoir water temperatures respectively. The validated river model had a Mean Absolute Error of 0.1°C and a Correlation Coefficient (r) of 0.90. The models can be used reliably to help anticipate the thermal consequences of future dams.
