Estimation of Dispersion Coefficients in Ungaged River Channel Using UAV-Based Spatio-Temporal Hyperspectral Image

Abstract: The dispersion coefficient is a quantitative measure of the degree of mixing of substances entering a river. It is an essential factor for understanding river flow and tracking the behavior of substances. Studies on estimating the dispersion coefficient in rivers have traditionally involved tracer experiments using radioactive isotopes or fluorescent materials. However, these methods face limitations in terms of tracer types, costs, and safety associated with direct measurement. In this study, natural tracers such as suspended sediments were utilized, and remote sensing was conducted using drone-mounted hyperspectral cameras to overcome the limitations of direct measurement. From the hyperspectral imagery, the concentration of suspended sediments, water depth of the measured cross-section, and flow velocity were calculated. These data were then used to derive the dispersion coefficient for the target river.
