Applicability of 2D Hydraulic Model for Small-Scale Urban Flood Scenarios in Heritage Sites: A Case Study of Katsura Imperial Villa, Japan

Abstract: This study evaluates the applicability of 2D hydraulic models for small-scale urban flood simulations, with a emphasis on heritage sites and their traditional flood adaptation measures. Using the Katsura Imperial Villa in Japan as a case study, this research incorporates architectural elements -- overhanging eaves, porous walls, and piloti structures -- that exemplify historical measures for coexistence with flood into numerical simulation. Flume experiments validate the effects of wall porosity and the 2D slot model on flood dynamics, providing calibration for numerical model. Results demonstrate that scaled-down 2D hydraulic models effectively capture detailed flood behaviors around heritage structures, offering insights into the integration of historical water management practices into modern flood mitigation. This interdisciplinary study underscores the role of traditional architectural wisdom in heritage conservation and localized flood resilience under climate change.
