Abstract: Water distribution networks (WDNs) have to be operated efficiently and equitably to supply the guaranteed amount and quality of water. The basic operation problem of a WDN is to meet the consumers’ demand which varies with the time of day as well as seasons and deliver the water at required pressure. Pumping cost accounts for a significant portion of the operational expenditure in WDNs. Many operators of WDNs in the global south are unable to meet the increasing demand for water. Hence, it is important to operate networks efficiently, sustainably and equitably. We present and discuss mathematical programming based approaches to solve the problem of optimal operation problem of WDNs. A web application for solving the scheduling problem has been developed and is available at www. smartwaternetworks. in
