Abstract: Saline gravity currents are experimentally reproduced through the lock-exchange technique and let flow over an erodible bed reach. The coupling of hydrodynamic mechanisms and processes of erosion, transport and deposition of sediment are investigated. High-resolution velocity measurements collected over a profile, video analysis and topography surveys are used to characterize the major forces acting on the particles at the bed, to isolate and assess their role in entrainment of sediment due to the passage of these currents. Furthermore, erosion and deposition patterns are analysed.
