Abstract: The interaction between fluid flow and rigid emergent vegetation in an open channel is analyzed on the basis of laboratory tests where the vegetation is represented by cylinders. An expression is proposed for the hydrodynamic drag coefficient as a function of the stem density. Moreover, the force exerted by the flow on the cylinders is evaluated numerically, and compared with the measured one. RANS equations are used to simulate one test with acceptable results.
