Abstract: This paper focus on the challenges of allocating water resources and operating the large Gove reservoir in Angola, to guarantee the multiple existing uses in the international Cunene basin, in the context of the changing technical, economic, environmental and social conditions in the region during almost 50 years of operation from the date of entry in service in 1975, and including the rehabilitation works done between 2008 and 2012. A description is given of the rehabilitation works of the dam body, due to the damage to the structures that occurred in 1986 and in 1990, and the construction of the hydropower plant, both designed by COBA in the 2000s. The operation before, during and after rehabilitation, and the need to comply with the international Cunene basin water resources sharing agreement between Angola and Namibia, are presented. Future perspectives for the operation of the reservoir, in the medium and long term, are also given, associated to the increase of water needs due to the development of irrigated agriculture in a dry region, impacts of climate change, hybridization with solar PV, new planned reservoirs and hydropower plants in the watershed.
