Monitoring Ocean Currents with High-Frequency Radars Along the Portuguese Coast: Overview and Challenges

Abstract: Like many coastal areas worldwide, the Portuguese coastlines are exposed to several challenges such as climate change, sea-level rise, natural hazards, including coastal erosion, storm surges, tsunamis, and maritime and pollution accidents. In that sense, high-frequency (HF) radars are extensively employed worldwide for coastal monitoring and measurement of ocean surface currents, waves, and wind. In line with its mission of assuring the permanent monitoring of the Portuguese coastal areas, aiming at a better knowledge of the marine environment and characterization of the coastal currents and wave measurements, the Portuguese Hydrographic Institute started operating the first high-frequency radar stations in 2008. In this work, we present a review of the lifespan of the Portuguese HF radar network operation, observing and monitoring regional capabilities in the Portuguese coastal areas. We also use in-situ data sets collected during project campaigns, which complement the existing measurements near the coast, making them excellent HFR observation validation sources.
