Abstract: A laboratory scale model was setup to collect data for the validation of approaches to determine the flow resistance induced by near-natural floodplain vegetation. In contrast to existing investigations, specific focus was set on the transferability of the hydraulic conditions to natural rivers with large floodplains by developing special silicone elements to model flexible riparian vegetation. The density of the vegetation was scaled using the hydrodynamic density for rigid vegetation and the leaf area index for flexible vegetation. Using a numerical 2D-model of the laboratory model in prototype scale, vegetation approaches were tested against the experimental data. The collected data offer the possibility to validate vegetation approaches for natural conditions and thus strengthening their applicability in practice.
