Abstract: This paper addresses the upstream reconstruction of a pollutant discharge occurring in a section of the Gállego River (Spain). The pollutant has been mathematically modeled as a solute transported by a velocity field given by shallow water equations. The adjoint method allows tracing the spatio-temporal evolution of the solute to obtain its origin.
