Land-Use Transformation and Its Eco-Environmental Effects of Production–Living–Ecological Space Based on the County Level in the Yellow River Basin

Abstract: The Yellow River Basin (YRB) is a critical ecological and economic zone in China, facing intensified conflicts among production, living, and ecological spaces (PLES) due to anthropogenic disturbances and climate change. This study examined the spatiotemporal evolution, transition modes, eco-environmental effects, and driving factors of PLES at the county level from 1980 to 2020. Results show 2000 as a pivotal year: living space continuously expanded, ecological space first decreased then increased, and production space first increased then decreased. Land-use transformations exhibit significant spatial differentiation, with the Hu Huanyong Line as a boundary. The environmental quality index (EQI) followed a similar initial decline and subsequent increase. National ecological policies and population-GDP growth are key drivers. These findings support detailed basin management for sustainable development.
