Coupled Surface-Subsurface Flow Modeling for Agro-Hydrological Applications

Abstract: This work presents a physically based coupled model that integrates two-dimensional shallow water equations for surface flow with the one-dimensional Richards equation for subsurface flow. The models exchange infiltration and pressure head at each time step, ensuring mass conservation. Root water uptake is also incorporated to simulate plant evapotranspiration. The coupled hydrological core serves as the foundation for a crop growth model aimed at exploring soil-plant-atmosphere interactions within the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems nexus.
