Abstract: Over the past ten years, research has advanced volume-of-fluid CFD methods to analyse mass transfer processes in sewer and wastewater systems. These developments now enable species-specific simulation of CH₄, CO₂, N₂O, H₂S and O₂ transfer. Validation using analytical diffusion cases, laboratory experiments and first applications to sewer geometries demonstrates that the approach reliably captures hydrodynamics, interfacial behaviour and resulting concentration fields. This contribution summarises the progress achieved, the remaining challenges and the future directions for integrating CFD-based mass transfer modelling into hydroinformatics workflows.
