Abstract: Fluid mud is commonly observed in engineered estuaries, when the local hydrodynamics and bathymetry provide enough fine cohesive sediment. However to date very few studies on the fluid mud dynamics in river estuarine zones have been conducted. To investigate fluid mud dynamics within river estuarine zones an autonomous vertical profiling unit (AVPU) was developed. The AVPU was designed to collect vertical profiles of local velocity, turbulence, suspended sediment and physio-chemistry properties at high frequency to study the interaction of fluid mud with the local hydrodynamics and bathymetry over the tidal cycle. The Ems River estuary, Germany is well known for containing large quantities of fluid mud and presented here are some initial observations from the vertical profile data collected during several AVPU deployments in the Ems.
