Abstract: The Caruachi Hydropower Plant (2196MW) is located in Venezuela. During2nd stage of river diversion, the Caroni River flowed through of 18 sluices located in lower body of the spillway. The objective of this investigation is to simulate the pressures in the elliptic roof of sluices and hydraulic downpull forces of the emergency gate, using the CFD in order to improve the sluices behavior. Two models with two-phase flow were created using ANSYS-CFX10. The simulations were compared with the experimental data of the physical models scales 1:40 and 1:13. The correlation of the pressures field in the roof of the sluice is 17%; however, the correlation of the downpull forces of the emergency gate with a smooth upstream face is 54%. Additional simulations were carried out with 40% perforations which extends form the bottom to the top of the gate and we obtained a decrease of 56% in the downpull force.
