Abstract: In 1988, the River Ravi experienced a flood unprecedented in his recorded history, which caused a considerable loss of life and property. A change in channel pattern (i. e. from meandering to braiding) was observed during this flood. The effect of this flood on the channel plan form has been investigated. Various approaches for the classification of channel plan forms are employed to analyse this natural river data. The results of this analysis show a favourable comparison between observation and predictions of the rational approach (Bettess and White (1983) framework with White et al. (1981) rational regime theory) as compared to the published empirical thresholds.
