Abstract: A linear stability analysis of the uniform solution for debris stream is performed in order to interpret the formation of debris waves occasionally observed to develop on the free surface of debris streams (see companion paper Lanzoni & Tubino, 1993). The outcome of the analysis based on a 1- D model is the prediction of instability for Froude numbers exceeding a threshold value ranging about 1. This finding agrees satisfactorily with experimental observations. No preferred wavelength is predicted by the present simple 1-D theory which cannot describe properly the behaviour of relatively short waves.
