Abstract: A debris flow avalanche was simulated by the sudden release of a viscous fluid retained by a removable screen. Physical experiments with a highly viscous oil in an open channel with glass walls that allowed for the observation and filmation of flow were first performed. Then, a mathematical model was expressed by the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, the equation of continuity and an additional equation of marker particles that moved with the fluid in a computational domain. These equations were solved numerically for low time levels using a finite element technique. Results from both the physical and mathematical models seemed to complement each other quite well, and, in order to compare them, physical experiments of turbulent flows were also recorded and a mathematical turbulent solution of the Saint-Venant equations was obtained through the method of characteristics.
