Abstract: A simple kinematic wave model for debris flow routing, obtained with the help of the mass conservation equation and rheological equations, is proposed. This model requires only a limited number of boundary conditions, making it suitable for the simulation of debris flow for which direct observations are only rarely available. An analytical solution is used to verify the algorithm employed to solve the model equation. Observations of debris flow surges at Kamikamihori valley in Japan, are used to test the model. In spite of the crude approximations involved in the selection of values for the model parameters, reasonable agreement between observed and computed values is found.
