Abstract: A 'third generation' discrete-spectral model was developed to simulate typhoon-generated waves in the Gulf of Bei Bu, a semi-enclosed shallow water bay in China, and in the South China Sea near Hong Kong. The model employs a split-operator scheme for solution; a dispersion correction step to account for the dispersive effect due to the frequency-dependent velocities of waves; and a digital filtering technique to enhance the computational efficiency. The linear bottom dissipation expression was found producing a more reasonable wave growth characteristics in an ideal test case as compared to the dissipation formulation based on quadratic friction law. The performance of the model is good and provides a further support to the 'third generation' formulation of spectral models.
