Abstract: A reclamation area, an area of 3,643 hectares covering 12 kilometers along the coast and extending 3.5 to 4.5 Kilometers off the coast, is being planned at western coast of middle Taiwan. This project necessitates a study on a dike which might cause less scouring at toe of the structure and provide protection for the new land against wave attacking. Six dike slopes including cot θ=2,3, 4,5, 6 and 7 were studied. Typhoon wave and monsoon wave were used in the experimental tests. It is concluded that typhoon wave causes more severe scouring in the vicinity of the dike than monsoon wave and that a dike slope of cot θ=3 might be an ideal one, since it has the advantages of causing less scouring and hasn't a very large section.
