Abstract: Under the validity assumption of the ergodic hypothesis, some recent theories enable us to link the expected value of the dispersion tensor of non-reactive tracers in heterogeneous formations with the sta-tistics of the permeability field. Some differences in the results have been observed between the measured aquifer dispersion process and the one predicted by these theories. This fact has been shown to be related to the extension Vo of the initial solute body. The paper studies the applicability of the results obtained under the ergodic assumption when IT, the characteristic length of Vo is of the same order of I, the permeability integral scale. After an introductory theoretical framework, the 2-D case is numerically investigated using a Monte Carlo procedure. The results allow to define the main characteristics of the evolution of a plume originating from a "small" injection area, like e. g. repositories and landfill.
