Abstract: Poor quality of the water discharge from reservoirs is a serious problem inJapan, where most reservoirs are located near a residential district.Among thewater quality problems in reservoirs, the problems of turbidity and lowtemperatures in the river downstream have been resolved by means of theselective withdrawal to adjust the level of the intakes from the stratifiedwater body.On the other hand the problem of eutrophication due to a hugeamount of phytoplankton produced in the reservoir is yet to be resolved. At present this brings about deterioration in the water quality as rank tapwater and in scenery and utilization of the water surface due to the water bloom.
