Abstract: In this study, a theoretical solution of the non-linear interaction of two free waves crossing in finite water depths has been expanded to the 3rd-order approximation, using the perturbation method. The velocity potential and water surface elevation are included in this study. The developed theory is applicable to the Stokes progressive waves, standing waves and short- crested waves. The amplitudes of 3rd-order terms grow linearly with time within the range in which the conditions of resonant interaction are nearly satisfied. The wave conditions in which the resonant interaction take place are obtained graphically.
