Abstract: The Kinematic wave equations for unsteady flow in stream networks is discretized using the weighted residual method, and a four point difference equation is developed for channel flow routing. The relationship between the four point difference scheme developed herein, and the conventional Muskingum scheme is established and thereby a new range for the weighting parameter θ of the Muskingum-Cunge equation is derived, i. e. 1/3≦ θ≦ 1/2. This four point equation is applied to a Srilankan catchment, namely the Kaluganga which intermittently causes floods especially in the Ratnapura area, and it is demonstrated that this model could forecast the discharge of this river with sufficient accuracy.
