Abstract: A quantitative simultaneous temperature and velocity measurement method based on particle tracking with the color image processing technique has been developed for analyzing a three-dimensional thermal fluid flow. Encapsulized thermo-sensitive liquid crystal particles suspended in thermal fluid flow are used as temperature and velocity sensor. To achieve this method successfully, the optical characteristic of the encapsulized thermo-sensitive liquid crystals is examined. For flow visualization, encapsulized thermo-sensitive liquid crystals and a halogen lamp beam were used. The measurement system consists of a three plane CCD color camera, a B/W CCD camera, a digital image processor interfaced with personal computer, and an originally developed algorithm for the three dimensional temperature and velocity tracking method. The present method was applied to a three dimensional natural convective flow, and a sample result through this technique is shown.
