Abstract: Traditionally, river engineering aimed at and reclamation, flood protection and navigability ofrivers only. The projects have been optimzed with respect to these different goals. The resultwas that the space left to rivers was minimized. To obtain this, flow velocities have beenmaximized.Rivers_in alluvial plains were trained in a way to obtain maximum sedimenttransport capacity. For most of the impotant regulation works, aggradation of the channel hadbeen the major fear.Traning resulted often in an overcapacity, which was later compensated byintroducing massive e drop structures.Where aggradation still occurred, regular dredging onquite long iver stretches was imposed.
