Port Redevelopment in Japan (Patterns and Characteristics)

Abstract: Recently,urban waterfronts in Japan are rapidly changing their face withthe redevelopment of ports and harbors. Ports and Harbors Bureau of theMinistry of Transport set forth its new policy for development of ports andharbors in 1985,entitled "Ports and Harbors Toward the 21st Century." Alongthe policy,a variety of redevelopment projects have been identified and plannedthroughout the country,under the initiative of local port management bodies andthe participation of the private sector,and some of them have been implementedand completed to assume the role of providing a wider range of economic andsocial functions.
