Abstract: Tokyo was once a"water capital",About 300years ago when Tokyo was called Edo,the Sumidariver and the associated waterways so called"Horiwari"formed the framework of the city ofEdo where roads were not kept in a sufficientcondition for the public transportation.Amongothers the Sumida river was not only the back-bone of the water transport, but also a spot forouting and amusements. It is not going too farto say that the brilliant culture of Edo flouri-shed with the Sumida river,as objects for theukiyoe color prints include a number of sceneson the Sumida river from the cherry blossomviewing in spring and fireworks and boating in summer.(Fig.1)
