Response of Velocity and Shear Stress to Abrupt Irregularity of Bed Roughness in Streams

Abstract: In order to protect sand bedscours due to bed shear stressin fluvial rivers,bed protec-tion works are often conductedin which a smooth fixed bed isconstructed with concrete andBsphalt materials along a dis-tance of river. In this case,the river bed consists ofsmooth protected bed and roughnon-protected sand bed.It is,therefore,very important inriver engineering as well as inhydraulics to reveal the respo-nse of velocity distributionand bed shear stress to abruptchanges of bed roughness inopen-channel flows. When thebed roughness abruptly changesfrom smooth to rough beds andconversely from rough to smoothbeds,an inner boundary layerdevelops from the boundarypoint between smooth and roughbeds,as shown in Fig.1.
