Abstract: Frequent flooding causes instability of the flow regime in river meandering systems. This instabilityleads to an increase in the rate ofdeposition and erosion proceses which,as a result, increases themigration rate of the river and causes a cutting-off of the meander loop at the neck. The developedcut-off channel can be regarded as a flood relief channel by allowing the excess flood flow to be side-spilled across the neck of the meander thus leading to more controlled and stabilised conditions in theriver meander.
