Abstract: The depletion of river runoff due to increased water consumption, the va-riation of velocity regimes and elevations as well as polluted inflows diver-sion result in sharp deterioration of river ecology and necessitate effectiveengineering improvements.Among these measures, for regulated river runoffsflashy releases from storage reservoirs can be applied. They allow the flowvelocity and depth to be increased and, occasionally,a natural hydrologicalriver flow regime to be maintained along a lengthy river portion. This mea-sure intensifies water masses mixing, increases the oxygen content in thewater and results in the disturbed silt layer absorbing the pollutants whichare actively oxidized in the river water with a sufficient content of oxygen. For these reasons, flashy releases due to their higher ecological efficiencyare preferred over smaller and constant sanitary ones;still, the parametersof these releases have to be validated and optimized.
