Abstract: The interaction of oblique incidence water waves with a vertical rigid thin barrier is analyzed to determine the reflection and transmission coefficients by an eigenfunction expansion method (EM). The accuracy of this technique is shown by comparing computed results with experimental data by Wiegel, 1960. The agreement between present solution and experim ental data, Wiegel's a pproxim ate theory and the boundary integral equation, method BIEM used by Liu and Abbaspour, 1982, is good. As for other theoretical solutions discrepancies become apparent for very short periods and for barriers extending close to the bottom or to the surface. Further, the tra nsmission coefficient increases monotonously with the angle of incidence. This behaviour changes with barrier's width.
