Salinity Intrusion Control in Well Stratified Estuaries and Waterways

Abstract: This research is concerned with the development of engineering control methods toprevent the long distance intrusion of saltwater in wellstratified estuaries or coastalwaterways.Such saltwater intrusions,in the form of a salt (or saline)wedge,are formedunder weakly energetic estuarine conditions,characterized primarily by a small tidal rangeand secondly by the absence of strong wind shear as in a well-channelized narrow geometry.In the saline wedge flow,the ocean salt water intrudes upstream against the direction of theoverlying freshwater flow.A sharp interface separates the fresh and salt water layers.Inits ideal steady-state form,the so-called arrested saline wedge,a force equilibrium smaintained between internal buoyant pressure gradients,interfacial shear stress,andconvective accelerations.
