Abstract: The Tapi river flowing into the Gulf of Khambat is one of the major rivers of India. Due to rapid industrial development on the banks of the river near Hazira in the recent past, the development of Tapi estuary for navigation has assumed importance. The situation in the estuary is however very complex due to the existence of a very large shallow bar at the entrance. The various factors influencing the sediment processes in the area and the possible solutions to improve the navigability through the the outer bar have been described in the paper.
