Abstract: The vertical diffusion of sediment particles suspended in a two-dimensional open channel turbulent flow is analyzed using the concept of Markovian processes. It is demonstrated that the diffusion of sediments depends on its size and density as well as on the local characteristics of fluid turbulence. Expression for the vertical turbulent diffusion coefficient is established based on experiments and field observations.
