Abstract: In a compound open channel the flow velocity on the flood plain and it in the main channel are different, and a mixing zone exists between two flows. It is necessary to clarify the flow structure in this region for investigating the interaction between main channel and flood plain flows. In this paper it is the objectives to clarify the fluid mixing in this region and compare with it in the 2-D mixing layer by using the flow visualization results on the water surface and in a cross section of the flow. The analogy between the fluid mixing in a compound open channel and it in the 2-D mixing layer has been recognized from the results.
