Abstract: The effect of discharge turbulence on the development of internal hydraulic jumps is investigated. The study is concerned with two type of turbulence. The first type is produced by roughness elements and the second type is generated by a system of grids. The study shows that the turbulence of a discharge has a significant impact on the relationship between the depth downstream of the jump and the dilution occurring in the jump region. The study also suggests that it would be possible, in practice, to enhance dilution by increasing the turbulence of a discharge. Finally, a simple method of extending the hydraulic jump theory for highly-turbulent discharges is described.
