Abstract: Reductions in the performance of sewage outfalls are sometimes attributed to the "Wedge Blocking" phenomenon caused by salt water intrusion in the pipe. The results of laboratory research conducted on a system reproducing the main characteristics of this phenomenon are reported The experim ental arrangement consisted of a horizontal pipe and two vertical risers. Tests made it possible to observe two different density stratifications: the length of one was a function of suitably defined densim etric Froude and Reynolds numbers, as previously shown for the salt wedge in a freely discharging pipe. The measurement of different layers' densities made it possible to determine the flow in each current using only volume and mass continuity equations. In the system studied here a dependence was found between the flow rate of these currents and the salt and fresh water flows.
