Abstract: The authors report on the development of surge tanks for peak-1oad and pumped-storage plants that lend themselves to any desired changes in loading or flow, that is, 'to completely free operation. Surge tanks of this type have been developed and installed in several power plants for more than twenty years in Austria. This has included a variety of studies and the development of a special throttling device. The perf ormance of the new surge tank design has been tested on prototypes. At the youngest of these instal1ations, the Hausling pumped-storage scheme equipped with two surge tanks, testing has been under way since autumn 1990.
