Abstract: Should we seek to formalise the unsteady water hammer problems facing engin-eers or should each case be treated in its complexity as it arises? Waterhammer is an operational dynamic load and as such is properly the desigmload for most pipe systems. However,it will not be analysed in fullwhile it remains a subject that mystifies most engineers. It will onlybe given the importance in design and analysis when a signifiant part of itis able to be made a'rule of thumb’or standardised in some way.
