Abstract: Water-hammer pressure wave transmission into the tunnel upstream is an indicator of characteristics of surge tanks, to which attention should be paid in surge-tank design. Surge-tank type and geometrical dimensions have a direct bearing on the transmission. In this paper, pressure wave transmission in connection with several types of surge tank is examined. Formulas and curves of transmission factor S following instantaneous valve closure are given. The surge tanks are evaluated from the point of view of pressure wave Transmission. Reasons for discrepanies in transmission characteristics are explained.
