Abstract: This paper deals with the problem of reducing low-frequency pressure fluctuations behind the Francis hydroturbine runner, particularly for the operating conditions of the generating unit with surplus power. A number of the design solutions reducing the level of lowfrequency pressure fluctuations has been studied in laboratory conditions. Model investigations resulted in the selection of the optimal version (from the point of view of fluctuations and cfficiency) that has been tested on a full-scale hydroturbine. Application of such designs for the Nurek (9turbines 310 MW each) and Chirkei hydroelectric plants (4 turbines 256 MW each) made it possible to reduce substantially the low-frequency fluctuations (Fig. 9, Ref. 7), mainly for the operational range with surplus power.
