Abstract: The statistical behaviour of the potential energy density and the energy flux of wave groups obtained from random simulated sea states on deep water was examined, and the dependence on the usual groupiness parameters of the sea state was investigated. An analytical expression for the p. d. f. of the potential energy density of the wave groups exceeding some threshold values was given, and the joint p. d. f. of the potential energy density and of the group length was analyzed. A comparison between the potential energy density of the wave groups and of the characteristic waves used as threshold values was made.
